AKC Dog Agility Trial
Add to your calendar
Date: May 9
Continues Until:
Location: Lions Park within the Mesa County Fairgrounds
Details: The Western Colorado Agility Club (WCAC) is hosting its annual AKC Dog Agility Trial this Mother’s Day Weekend at Lions Park within the Mesa County Fairgrounds. This three-day competitive event begins at 8 a.m. each day, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (May 9-11), and continues until the last dog runs, usually around 5 p.m. Our Judge this year is Cynthia Blanton from New Mexico. Competitors will be coming from all over the Rocky Mountain Region with many different breeds represented, including mixed-breed “All-American” dogs! This year WCAC welcomes a collaborative effort with Roice-Hurst Humane Society, who will be providing volunteers to work in the agility ring throughout the 3-day trial. Roice-Hurst volunteers will also be present to accept donations, sell RHHS items, and give out information about the shelter. The emphasis of an agility competition is speed and accuracy. There will be four different types of courses over the 3-day event. The Standard agility course involves unleashed dogs, guided by their handlers, racing against the clock through tunnels, over jumps, up and down ramps and a seesaw, weaving through poles, and leaping through tires. Adjustments are made in time, jump height and course difficulty to accommodate dogs of all sizes and competitive levels. The Jumpers with Weaves class, consists of a course containing only jumps, weave poles and tunnels. Without the other obstacles to slow them down, this is a very fast paced event! The other two events are FAST (Fifteen and Send Time) and Time to Beat (T2B) and test strategy in addition to speed and accuracy. Dog agility is one of the fastest growing canine sports, experiencing greater than 50% growth over the last 5 years. It builds rapport between dog and owner and is a healthy outlet for high energy dogs. So “get your wag on” and come see for yourself how much fun this can be! Everyone is welcome to this free event. It is outdoors on grass, so we encourage you to bring water and sun-protection. Children are welcome, but not strollers. Please leave non-competing dogs at home.
