POLAR OPPOSITES: COLE PORTER AND IRVING BERLIN
7:30pm, Moss Performing Arts Center, Mesa Experimental Theatre
Irving Berlin was the son of a Jewish cantor who

immigrated to the US from Siberia. He wrote around 1500 songs (including the beloved "White Christmas" and "God Bless America") but never learned to read or write music notation. On the other hand, Cole Porter was born in Indiana to wealthy Protestants and studied both at Yale and Harvard. The playboy spent his evenings in the lap of luxury while turning out favorites like "Let's Misbehave" and "Night and Day". While Berlin wrote simple rhymes and tunes about hearth and home, Porter wrote complex rhymes and rhythms that boasted of sophistication and were often filled with sexual innuendo. Join us as we explore the lives and music of these polar opposites!
