For twenty eight years, Summer Art Camp has given the community’s children the opportunity to explore art in all its forms and then encouraged those students to explore their own creativity. The week-long sessions immerse students daily in, among many other things, the study of art masters, cultural art heritages from around the world, the world of clay, the art of music, theater and group art installation. Each weekly session ends with a punch and cookie reception when families and friends are invited into The Art Center to see the work that the campers have accomplished during the week. Children love this part of camp the best, when they can “teach” their parents what they have learned. For many campers, this is the first opportunity to “fall in love” with the arts, and camp is a family affair spreading their lessons and their new found love of art to their family and beyond. Summer Art Camp tries very hard to reflect the rich diversity of arts and cultures in its programming. Every week SAC strives to open young eyes to new ways of looking at and understanding the community in which they live. Week 1: May 27-May 30 (4 days, Tuition $76 Member / $96 Non-member) Legos and Tinker & Block, and Artful Animals Discover new and old ways of creating 3 dimensional artwork. Celebrate the history of animals in art, from ancient times to the present day. Stuff, build, draw, and paint creatures that roam the earth and the outer limits of your imagination. Community “Gawa” project. Week 2: June 2- 6 Art Smarts Investigate the language of art. Campers will learn the vocabulary of art while exploring a variety of art materials and processes, including sculpture, printmaking, collage, painting, and clay . Learn about composition, balance, line, and symmetry while making art! Students will learn traditional clay hand building techniques and art related to weather . Community “Gawa” project. Week 3: June 9-13 It’s Easy Being Green Join us for a week that will inspire you to use found and recycled objects to create beautiful works of art. Students will work with melted crayon art, garden junk art, decoupage boxes, sun catcher, and more. The camp will learn about conservation group and related projects. Community “Gawa” project. Week 4: June 16- 20 Super “I” Grab your cape and escape to planet IMAgination. Tap your inner superhero. Create story boards with traditional drawing. Create your own super hero Discover the amazing talents and powers of artists such as Van Gogh, Picasso, Hopper, and Matisse. Escape into the freedom of dance. Community “Gawa” project. Week 5: June 23- 27 (Camp will be at the Botanical Gardens Wednesday June 25) Great outdoors Landscapes, cityscapes, and seascapes will serve as inspiration for this session. Students will capture the beauty of nature with natural materials, watercolors, pastels, and paint. Students will create garden art, stepping stones sun catcher, and wind chimes Student meet at Botanical Garden June 25. Discover the art of Andy Goldsworthy. Will discuss conservation groups such as Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund , and Oceana and do related projects. Community “Gawa” project. Week 6: June 30-July 3 (4 days, Tuition $76 Member / $96 Non-member) Around the World in Four Days This is your ticket for a whirlwind art-making adventure! Begin each day will hold discover of a new country and create works of art inspired by the places you visit. The country will be Mexico, Japan, Africa, and Iceland. Community “Gawa” project. Week 7: July 7-11 Celebrate Imagination Design your own puppets that you will bring to life in a puppet show with other campers. Participants will learn how to create a variety of characters, props, & backdrops that all tell a story connected to a central theme and or idea. Create fantastical landscapes and invented creatures and characters while experimenting with drawing, painting and sculpting techniques! Camp will be visited by puppeteer. Community “Gawa” project. Week 8: July 14-18 Stories Come Alive Make art and bring your ideas to life: The students will use drawing, clay sculpting, and mixed media materials to craft unique characters and invent stories. Students will explore a variety of storytelling methods. “Got Paint” students will experiment with traditional and non-traditional methods telling it own story. Camp will hear DJ Longfellow Strange fellow presentation. Community “Gawa” project. Week 9: July 21-25 Artist Tool Box Fill your artist tool box with the elements of art! Students will look at and create artwork exploring the process of art-making. Art elements such as shape, form, pattern, color, and line will be discovered. Fun and exciting class projects include colorful printmaking and imaginative sculptures. Students will explore the magical world of Surrealism. Students will use materials including oil pastels, paint, to test techniques of abstraction and color theory . Community “Gawa” project. Week 10: July 28 – August 1 Moving ART Experiment with moving art. Discover the theater; student will learn tricks of the theater and create a costume piece and perform a short skit. Young artists will learn the basics of animation and experiment with different types of sequential art.
