While on tour with various projects over the past few years, bassist extraordinaire Reed Mathis spent his spare time rearranging Beethoven (Symphonies 3 and 6), recording each newly reimagined movement with a long and impressive “who’s-who” list of his musical brethren, including Phish’s Page McConnell and Mike Gordon, Marco Benevento, Joe Russo, the Barr Brothers, Robert Walter and Galactic’s Stanton Moore.
The resulting double album, “Beathoven,” was released September 2016 on Royal Potato Family records.
When imagining what it would be like to tour these Beethoven masterpieces, Mathis rearranged his rearrangements a second time, this time welding Beethoven’s motifs and melodies to modern-era dance beats, with plenty of waypoints for the musicians to jump off into heavy, full-band improvisations. It’s jamtronica with Beethoven — hence, the world’s first CDM (“classical dance music”) band.
While the album’s many special guests will show up at various shows along the way, to tour the album for the next two years, Mathis assembled his very own dream team: Jay Lane (Primus, Ratdog) on drums, Todd Stoops (RAQ / Kung Fu) on keyboards, Cochrane McMillan (Tea Leaf Green) on percussion and laptop, and Clay Welch — a young guitar phenom who literally grew up studying Mathis as a bass player while following Mathis’ then-band, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, from show to show as a fan.

In a city known more for its pop imports and jam bands, Jeff Rady (pedal steel) and Dustin Devine (lead guitar and vocals) created 5 & Dimers on a whim, but for good reason: they wrote some good country songs and had no band to play them. Dive into the history of the Denver music scene and you’ll find a tradition of not only great country music but a long line of country players. From the late 60s all throughout the 80s country music was a featured genre up and down the Front Range: Honky Tonks ruled the roosts and a pedal steel player could find a gig 6 nights a week.
With history behind them and songs in hand, 5 & Dimers booked studio time at Macy Sound Studios, a Denver institution, and recorded 8 songs straight to tape in two days with a patchwork band scrounged from late night phone calls to secret experts and diamond-in-the-rough talent found in local dive bars. Born from a shoe string budget and limited time, the record is not only raw and authentic, but sounds like a throwback to how country records were made in the mid-1960s. 5 & Dimers is a celebration of that golden era mixing a blend of vintage country and old school rock-and-roll with just a hint of psychedelia.

canyons and mesas. Trying to identify them from a book can sometimes be frustrating. And beyond simply learning the name of that mysterious flower, have you ever wanted to know more about these most colorful denizens of the desert?
Canyonlands Field Institute is offering a full day Desert Wildflower Seminar dedicated to the diversity of wildflowers in southeastern Utah. The field trip will be led by local Moab biologist and wildflower expert Joel Tuhy.
Joel, who also works for the Nature Conservancy, has been studying and photographing wildflowers in the region for over 30 years. We will not only learn the names but gain an appreciation for desert plants’ particular habitat requirements, adaptations, and interesting cultural uses.
This day trip includes lunch, transportation, hikes and interpretive talks. This program starts at 8:30 am at our office located at 1320 S. Hwy 191 just south of Moab, UT. Locations visited during the trip will be determined depending on where the best blooms happen to be at the time, but expect a number of short hikes up to half a mile round trip from the vehicle during the day. We will return to town late afternoon, arriving at CFI around 4:30-5:00.
