EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
 
Position: Executive Director
Reports to: Board of Directors
Location:  Grand Junction, CO
Classification: Full-time, salaried, exempt

OVERVIEW OF POSITION
The Executive Director provides oversight of the day-to-day operational activities and programs of the radio station and broadcast facilities. The ED will administer station policies & procedures and supervise paid staff, volunteers, station contractors, and contract employees. The ED maintains oversight of organization’s finances and reports to and collaborates with the Board of Directors. The ED ensures compliance with FCC, music licensing, and other governing entities, and maintains oversight of equipment and technology. KAFM is committed to fostering, cultivating and preserving a culture of respectfulness, diversity, equity and inclusion towards the Staff, Board, Volunteers, Listeners, Studio Guests, Underwriters and Partners.

SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Administration of Station Policies and Procedures
  • Establish and implement organizational goals, objectives, policies, and operational procedures

SUPERVISION OF STATION PERSONNEL
  • Maintain an effective managerial philosophy best suited for KAFM’s close working culture.
  • Assign duties to staff
  • Provide regular feedback, coaching, and communication
  • Conduct annual staff performance reviews
  • Hire new staff when necessary
  • Hire and oversee independent contractors

FINANCIAL OVERSIGHT
  • Develop annual operating budget, maintain budget records, and track budget
  • Oversee bookkeeping and work closely with Accountant for daily bookkeeping and CPA firm for Annual Audit as required by CPB
  • Provide fiscal reports to the Board of Directors
  • Work closely with the Corporate Development Director to ensure underwriting remains on goal

COMPLIANCE
  • Ensure compliance with FCC rules, regulations and guidelines, and standards applicable to non-commercial radio
  • Ensure compliance with music licensing entities
  • Ensure compliance with IRS and State regulations for non-profits

EQUIPMENT AND TECHNOLOGY OVERSIGHT
  • Ensure that the facility and equipment—including studios, offices, computers, software, transmitter, telecommunications, networks, and any other materials or items needed to effectively broadcast daily programming on a 24-hour basis—are operating, maintained and repaired in a timely manner, using staff, contractors, and volunteers as appropriate.
  • Ensure adequate office software, hardware and integration of computer systems to support administration, underwriting, fundraising, membership, website and communications
  • Develop plans to update systems as necessary
  • Ensure website is regularly updated and positively reflects KAFM’s mission and branding
  • Attend monthly Board of Directors meetings
  • Keep Board apprised of station business
  • Collaborate with the Board on policy development and strategic planning

PROGRAMMING
  • Work closely with Programming Director to ensure programming achieves station’s mission and goals
  • Provide general oversight to the staff and volunteers to ensure quality programming; including appropriate use of syndicated programs, quality production of live or station-produced programs, and increasing listenership

ADDITIONAL DUTIES
  • Foster a cooperative, constructive work environment and work effectively with KAFM stakeholders
  • Maintain close relationships with other local nonprofits and businesses with aligned values
  • Serve as the primary communication link to other agencies & organizations involved in public broadcasting, represent KAFM's interests to those agencies & organizations, and seek opportunities for collaboration or utilizing shared resources
  • Act as a spokesperson for KAFM at public events
 
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS        
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, communications, or a related field with at least seven years of increasingly responsible experience in broadcast media, a related field, or equivalent experience.  Previous experience working in community radio is highly desirable. 
  • Strong management skills.  A minimum of three years’ experience managing employees.  Previous experience managing volunteers is also desired.  Ability to recruit, train, coach, and motivate employees and volunteers. 
  • Ability to build strong working relationship and interact professionally at all levels, including with staff, volunteers, underwriters, members, outside suppliers, listeners, and the community at large.  Represents KAFM in a professional manner.
  • The ability to read and interpret financial reports, establish and manage budgets, and manage projects with limited financial resources. 
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast paced environment.  Multi-tasking skills are essential.
  • Advanced communication skills (written, verbal, and presentation).
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission, values, and goals of KAFM.
  • Excellent reasoning ability, problem solving skills, and judgment.  Creativity, integrity, trustworthiness, and a bias for action and results.
  • Strong computer and IT skills.  Working knowledge of radio apparatus and infrastructure.
  • Ability to generate original ideas, manage creative teams, and encourage acceptable creative risk taking.
  • Strong working knowledge of the laws, ethics, and industry regulations affecting radio operations.
 
COMPENSATION
This is a full-time position with a salary of $50,000. The Executive Director’s salary is reflective of KAFM’s annual budget.
