KAFM is seeking a talented and experienced individual to join our team as Music Director. We are a non-profit Community Radio Station in Western Colorado.

You will work closely with the station’s Show Hosts to making sure they have access to the most current music available. You will also serve as the liaison between the radio station and radio promoters, musical artists, and record labels.

Qualifications
3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Deep understanding of music and desire to learn the business aspect of music promotion.
Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication.
Exceptional organizational and people skills. Must be a Team Player!
Ability to concurrently work on deeply focused creative projects as well as manage finely detailed forms and processes within firm deadlines.

This is a part time position but can grow into a fulltime position.

Job Duties Include:

  • Working with KAFM staff and volunteer programmers to ensure KAFM’s broadcast music content aligns with the mission, values and objectives in the station’s strategic plan.

  • Work with the Program Director to recruit, train, and direct the work of volunteers on the KAFM Music Bureau, who assist in various Music Department duties, including music review and library maintenance.

  • Obtain and review new music (physical and digital libraries) from local, state and national outlets for station airplay; communicate airplay with record labels and distributors; maintain additions, deletions and organization of our music libraries; oversee music donations from the public.

  • Compile weekly charts of KAFM new music spins in KAFM’s main genres, submit to College Music Journal, NCAA, other reporting agencies and share charts with programmers.

  • Responsible for the development and creation of overnight and backup playlists of new music and acquired programs for broadcast; develop catalog of evergreen shows from selected volunteer programmers; develop and maintain our clock for automated programs.

  • Maintain online database of music (Zoho Creator).

  • Responsible for acquisition of music premiums to be used during bi-annual station Member Drives; recommend new strategies for use of music premiums.

  • Report online music play to SoundExchange.

  • Maintain Music Department handbook.

Day-To-Day Duties:

  • The Music Director will be responsible for ensuring the music being presented to the Programmers for airplay matches the mission of KAFM. What this boils down to is, “Does this music get played anywhere else in the Valley?” If not, KAFM probably wants it. There is overlap, but KAFM is primarily interested in presenting the audience with quality music to discover, whether by new artists, new music by old favorites, or hidden gems by old favorites. KAFM is here to create something different.

  • Finding new volunteers for the Music Bureau isn’t difficult. Most volunteers are here because they love music. What this does entail, however, is training those volunteers to streamline music services and how to access music.

  • Obtaining new music has been established at KAFM, but new distributors and artists are always essential. KAFM can do this on a local level by asking local groups to donate their music. Distributors will call or email the Music Director weekly to Track new music. The Music Director needs to keep on top of this correspondence as it helps with new music acquisition. Overseeing KAFM’s libraries means keeping the libraries clean (both physically and ensuring there isn’t overlap, music is labeled correctly, etc…).

  • Charting new music is essential to new music acquisition. KAFM charts to the College Music Journal weekly with three separate charts: Jazz, World, and Top 200 (College). See Manual for how to chart music. A fourth chart, Roots, is compiled for programmer use.

  • Playlist creation is necessary for after-hours programming, as well as for emergency shows (ie, when a Programmer cannot make their show suddenly). See Manual for playlist creation.

  • The online database is used by the Music Director and Music Bureau, and it keeps record of all the new music that has come in to KAFM. Keeping this updated is essential for Tracking calls with Distributors, as well as seeing what needs to be reviewed and added, and what can wait.

  • Music premiums for Membership Drives are always changing. The Music Director needs to keep an eye on what makes potential Members really decide to support KAFM. They also need to acquire them from Distributors, or find them for a feasible price.

The Music Director wears many hats and must keep on top of new music trends and tastes. Volunteers can (and do) help with many of these job duties.

This is a part time position, with the possibility to move into a full time position, at $16 per hour.
