We honor a true member of the KAFM family—John Anglim.

John was a rare creative force—an award-winning artist, photographer, designer, writer, and musician whose work spanned disciplines and left a lasting mark wherever it landed. His talent reached far beyond the Grand Valley, appearing in national publications like PhotoMethods, Creativity, American Institute of Graphic Arts, Arts & Crafts, and Art Directions.
Locally, John helped shape the visual and cultural landscape of our community. As former Creative Director of Grand Valley Magazine and through his work with Resource Design, he brought ideas to life with clarity, beauty, and intention. He was also an author—his book Footloose in Bardo: Fifty Years of Poems offering a deeply personal window into a lifetime of observation, reflection, and artistry and Walkabout: A collection of photographs from around the world and 40 years of wandering with a camera .
John’s creative life extended deeply into music. As one half of Flat Top Reed, alongside Paul Harshman, he helped form the heart of an acoustic duo rooted in decades of musical experience. Together, they explored blues, folk, rock, country, and rockabilly—drawing from long and varied musical paths that connected them to stages and artists across the country. Their album Junction earned critical acclaim and a growing following, and their work was even featured by noted music writer and historian Rebecca Davis.
Over the years, John shared the stage with an impressive range of artists, including The Subdudes, The Dixie Chicks, Lu Ann Barton, and Trout Fishing in America—just a glimpse into a lifetime spent making music. And always, with a harmonica in hand, he brought a sound that was unmistakably his—full of soul, character, and heart.
But here at KAFM, John wasn’t just an artist—he was part of the fabric of this station. In our early days, he helped guide KAFM as a member of the Board of Directors, shaping what community radio would become in the Grand Valley. And for years, his voice became a familiar and welcome sound on the air—co-hosting The Kitchen Sink every Friday, and bringing insight and creativity to State of the Arts on the first Friday of each month.
We’re grateful for the time we shared, the art he gave us, and the music and words he leaves behind.
John Anglim will be deeply missed—and warmly remembered
